The Fountain Square Center
A Unique Partnership for Learning, Healing & Serving
Southeast Community Services (SECS) has been providing
programs and activities designed to assist community residents in achieving
their goals for many years. In the mid 1970's, HealthNet Southeast Health Center
moved into the location at 901 Shelby. Now, SECS and SE Health Center have a
new partner-in-residence--the University of Indianapolis-- to create the Fountain
Square Center. Together, the partners provide comprehensive services to residents
while providing valuable service learning and professional practice opportunities
to U of I students, staff and faculty. Each organization will retain its individual
identity, but all three organizations will collaborate on projects and initiatives
to improve the well being of area residents.
SE Health Center has been providing health services to area residents for over 30 years. Services include
adult medicine, pediatric medicine, obstetrics, prenatal care, immunizations, HIV testing, counseling, care
coordination and treatment, health education, nutrition, lab and family planning. They will also offer dental
services at the Fountain Square Center. Through partnerships with SECS and U of I, SE Health Center
will work to provide more services including occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychological services and geriatric
services.
SECS will continue to offer employment services, emergency assistance, information
and referral, and a senior nutrition and activity program. Co-located services
include Family and Social Services Administration, IPS Adult Education/G.E.D.,
SE Health Center and Southeast Umbrella Organization/SUMO Weed & Seed. The new
facility includes offices, classroom space, a computer lab and a wellness center
for senior citizens (in conjunction with the U of I).
The U of I has long had a relationship with both SECS and SE Health Center, and their
investment in the Fountain Square Center is a product of that relationship. The Community Programs Center, in
conjunction with the Center for Aging and Community, coordinates the dynamic, long-term partnership between
SECS, SE Health Center and the university to enhance the social and health services provided by the agencies
to the residents of the Southeast Neighborhoods of Indianapolis. Participating academic disciplines include
Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Psychology, Social Work and Applied Sociology. U of I
occupies offices, classrooms, exam rooms and research space at the Fountain Square Center.
